> Anthropic just launched Claude computer use — letting Claude click, type, and navigate your Mac. It's impressive.

## Anthropic Just Dropped a Bomb

On March 24, Anthropic [announced](https://claude.com/blog/dispatch-and-computer-use) that Claude can now use your computer. Not in a metaphorical "it helps you write code" way. Claude literally moves your mouse, clicks buttons, opens apps, scrolls through websites, and fills in spreadsheets — all while you watch or walk away.

The internet lost its mind. [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/24/anthropic-claude-ai-agent-use-computer-finish-tasks.html) ran the story. [CNET](https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/claude-control-your-computer-to-perform-tasks/) did a deep dive. Reddit threads exploded with people testing it on everything from expense reports to 3D printing workflows.

And if you are an OpenClaw user, you probably had one reaction: **"Wait — my agent has been doing this."**

You would be right. And wrong. Let us break down what Claude computer use actually is, what it is not, and how it compares to what OpenClaw has been quietly shipping for months.

## What Claude Computer Use Actually Does

Here is the short version: when Claude Cowork cannot find a direct integration (like a Slack connector or Google Calendar plugin), it falls back to controlling your screen. It takes screenshots, identifies UI elements, and moves the cursor to interact with whatever is on your display.

Think of it as the world's most patient intern looking over your shoulder and clicking things for you.

**What it can do:**
- Open apps and navigate menus
- Browse the web (scroll, click links, fill forms)
- Move files between folders
- Batch-resize photos
- Export a pitch deck as a PDF and attach it to a calendar invite
- Fill in spreadsheets

**What it cannot do (yet):**
- Work when your computer is asleep
- Run on anything other than macOS
- Access sensitive apps (some are blocked by default)
- Handle complex multi-step workflows reliably (Anthropic calls it "research preview" for a reason)
- Run without the Claude desktop app open

Pair it with [Dispatch](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/13947068-assign-tasks-to-claude-from-anywhere-in-cowork), released the week before, and you can text Claude from your phone to trigger tasks on your Mac. That is genuinely cool.

But there is a ceiling — and OpenClaw users already know where it is.

## What OpenClaw Has Been Doing Since Day One

OpenClaw does not control your computer by staring at screenshots and guessing where to click. It runs **directly on your machine** with native access to your file system, terminal, browser automation (via Playwright), APIs, and any CLI tool you install.

The difference is fundamental: Claude computer use works *through* the GUI. OpenClaw works *under* the GUI.

Here is what that means in practice:

**File operations:** Claude computer use opens Finder and clicks around. OpenClaw runs `mv`, `cp`, `find` — instantly, silently, no screen interaction needed.

**Browser tasks:** Claude computer use scrolls and clicks a visible browser window. OpenClaw spins up headless Playwright sessions — faster, more reliable, and you can keep using your browser while it works.

**Email and calendar:** Claude computer use navigates to Gmail in a browser tab. OpenClaw uses direct API access (Google Workspace CLI, IMAP) — no screen needed, works even when the display is off.

**Coding:** Claude computer use can open your IDE and type. OpenClaw spawns Claude Code, Codex, or any coding agent as a background subprocess — full IDE capabilities without touching the screen.

**Scheduling:** Claude computer use... cannot schedule anything on its own. OpenClaw has built-in cron jobs. Set a task to run at 8 AM every Monday and forget about it.

## The Honest Comparison

| Feature | Claude Computer Use | OpenClaw |
|---|---|---|
| **How it works** | Screenshots + mouse/keyboard control | Native CLI, API, and file system access |
| **Runs when screen is off** | No — needs display active | Yes — headless, always-on |
| **Platform** | macOS only (March 2026) | macOS, Linux, Windows (WSL), VPS, Raspberry Pi |
| **Phone control** | Yes, via Dispatch | Yes, via Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal, Discord, iMessage |
| **Scheduling** | Manual dispatch only | Built-in cron system |
| **Browser automation** | Visual (clicks real browser) | Playwright (headless or visible) |
| **Multi-model** | Claude only | Any model — Claude, GPT, Gemini, local via Ollama |
| **Sub-agents** | Limited (Dispatch spins Cowork sessions) | Full multi-agent orchestration with any coding agent |
| **Self-hosted** | No — Anthropic cloud + desktop app | Yes — your hardware, your data |
| **Cost** | $20/mo Pro or $100-200/mo Max | Free (open source) + API costs |
| **Privacy** | Screenshots sent to Anthropic for processing | Everything stays local unless you choose otherwise |
| **Reliability** | ~50% on complex tasks (early preview) | Mature — production users running 24/7 |

## Where Claude Computer Use Actually Wins

Let us be fair. There are scenarios where Claude computer use is genuinely better:

**1. Zero setup.** You do not install anything beyond the Claude desktop app. No config files, no terminal, no API keys. It just works. For someone who has never opened a terminal, that is enormous.

**2. Apps with no API.** Some apps simply do not have a CLI or API. Old-school desktop software, proprietary tools, browser-only dashboards with no public API. Claude computer use can interact with anything that has a screen. OpenClaw needs a programmatic interface.

**3. Visual tasks.** If a task requires *seeing* what is on screen — like reviewing a design mockup, checking a PDF layout, or navigating a complex web UI — screenshot-based control is the right tool.

**4. Non-technical users.** If you are not comfortable with YAML config files and terminal commands, Claude computer use removes that barrier entirely.

## Where OpenClaw Is Miles Ahead

**1. Reliability.** GUI-based control is inherently fragile. A window resizes, a popup appears, a loading spinner takes too long — and the task fails. CLI and API-based automation does not have this problem.

**2. Speed.** Moving a mouse and clicking takes seconds per action. Running a shell command takes milliseconds. For batch operations (rename 500 files, process 100 emails, deploy to 3 servers), there is no comparison.

**3. Always-on operation.** OpenClaw runs on a Mac Mini, a VPS, or a Raspberry Pi in your closet — 24/7, no screen required. Claude computer use stops working the moment your laptop sleeps.

**4. Multi-channel messaging.** OpenClaw talks to you on Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal, Discord, iMessage, Slack — wherever you already are. Claude Dispatch is limited to the Claude mobile app.

**5. Multi-model flexibility.** OpenClaw uses whatever model fits the task. Claude Opus for complex reasoning, GPT for certain tasks, local Ollama models for privacy-sensitive work. Claude computer use is locked to Claude.

**6. Full agent orchestration.** OpenClaw can spawn sub-agents, run parallel tasks, coordinate between a coding agent and a research agent and a messaging agent simultaneously. Claude computer use is one agent doing one thing at a time.

## The Real Question: Do You Even Need Computer Use?

Here is the thing most people miss: **you do not actually want an AI that controls your screen.** You want an AI that gets things done.

Screen control is a fallback — a way to interact with software that was designed for humans, not machines. Every time Claude moves your mouse, it is working around the fact that it does not have direct access to the underlying system.

OpenClaw skips that entire layer. It talks directly to APIs, file systems, databases, and CLIs. When it needs a browser, it uses Playwright — which is faster, more reliable, and does not hijack your display.

The ideal setup? Use both:

- **OpenClaw** for everything that has a programmatic interface (which is almost everything)
- **Claude computer use** for the rare cases where you need to interact with a GUI-only app

You can even run Claude Code *through* OpenClaw as a sub-agent, giving you the best of both ecosystems.

## How to Get Started

**If you are already on OpenClaw:** You already have more capability than Claude computer use offers. Focus on setting up [skills](/pricing), [cron jobs](/docs), and messaging integrations to get the most out of your agent.

**If you are on Claude Pro/Max and curious about OpenClaw:** The two are not mutually exclusive. OpenClaw is free and open source. Install it, connect your Anthropic API key, and you now have Claude's brain with OpenClaw's body.

**If you are starting from zero:** We built a [getting started guide](/blog/getting-started-openclaw-free) that walks you through setup in under 10 minutes. No coding required.

## The Bottom Line

Claude computer use is a genuine milestone. Anthropic built something that makes AI tangible — you can *watch* it work, which makes it feel real in a way that terminal commands never will.

But OpenClaw users know the truth: the flashiest approach is not always the most effective one. An agent that quietly processes your emails, manages your calendar, deploys your code, and monitors your servers — all without touching your screen — is more powerful than one that slowly clicks through your browser.

The future of AI agents is not about controlling computers. It is about making computers irrelevant. You should not need to think about what app to open or what button to click. You should just say what you want, and it happens.

OpenClaw is closer to that future. And it is free.
